Historical Curiosities
Vesuvius is a symbol of the destructive and generative force of nature. In his works Andy Warhol chose attractive and seductive or distressing and frightening subjects: the image of Vesuvius has all these characteristics.
Warhol made various versions of Vesuvius in different colors and sizes. This series of works was exhibited in 1985 in a large exhibition dedicated to him in the Museum of Capodimonte inNaples.
The images chosen by Warhol for his paintings were the symbols and myths of his time: film and music stars, mug shots of wanted people, Coca-Cola, Campbell's soup, road accidents, the electric chair, the dollar, the gun, the Mona Lisa, the atomic bomb, racial clashes, Mao, the fearsome enemy of capitalism.
Andy Warhol represented these subjects using an effective, immediate and familiar language to all social and cultural strata, the visual language of advertising and mass media, the language of consumerism.
